Do you know what this is? Are you thinking it looks like a large garlic press? Well if you guessed a vintage potato ricer, you are correct! The ricer lets you turn your cooked potatoes (and other vegetables) into a rice-like consistency. Simply peel and cook your potatoes and when done, cut them into chunks small enough to fit in your ricer, press down on the handle and voila! Little riced potatoes. Commonly used years ago to help mash your potatoes, but also great to puree food for babies. Potatoes were a staple years ago and rice was not - mothers often used this tool to give a new texture to the often hum drum potato. Found in antique markets everywhere and usually priced under $15. Why use one today? You will have to try it for yourself and see just how light and fluffy your potatoes can be!
Next up on our list of great summer items to resurrect - the Shelton picnic basket. The Shelton company dates back to 1911 when the original company (founded in 1862) was sold to a new owner and moved to Shelton, Connecticut. The baskets are made of hand drawn oak or ash splints. Great for summer picnics and barbeques - convenient with flip down handles and a hinged lid. I lined my own with a piece of vinyl to make it waterproof - so it can be used to pack your cold beverages or to take your summer salad on ice to your next event. Not only are the Shelton baskets perfect for summer living, they are a great solution when you need extra storage in your home. In the bathroom for rolled up towels, in the mudroom for hats and mitts, or in the family room for toys and games. Easy to find at antique shops, and usually priced under $55. When shopping check it over thoroughly to make sure the bottom is still intact and the handles are secure if you wish to use it for carrying. Completely versatile and timeless, why not find one today! Raw vintage resurrected.
