The Green Bijou studio is undergoing a renovation this summer - our contractor Mike was here today and took this amazing photo of an Indigo Bunting just outside our studio door - incredible!
Next up in our Vintage Resurrection series - antique ice cream scoops! Summer is finally here and what screams summer better than ice cream? These ice cream scoops came in a variety of styles but the principle is the same - a levered metal ring on a push handle cascades through the inside of the scoop, leaving you with perfect round scoops every time! There are modern versions of this on the market, but somehow summer just seems better when you're using one of these antique wooden handled styles. I have my grandmother's and lovingly hand wash it so the wooden handle doesn't dry out. They often work best if you dip the bowl end into a glass of hot water before each scoop. Available at thrift stores and antique shops, usually priced under $22. Enjoy!
It's official! Summer has finally arrived. What better way to get into the mood than with a bit of arm candy? Try our multi-wrap Peace bracelet - new for summer - made of recycled faux snake skin belt leather and two tone Czech glass beads, featuring removable dyed stone peace symbol, with lobster clasp closure. Length, 27-34". This versatile piece can also be worn as a belt over your summer tunic and since the peace sign is removable, can have a hit of fun summer colour or be totally neutral to work with any outfit. Available in a variety of colours. Visit our New, Now Collection to see them all. Peace out!
Next up in our Vintage Resurrection - purse hooks! Wedding season is upon us and these little beauties add a touch of class and save your table surface from the clutter of evening bags. Designed so that the decorative pendant lays flat on the edge of the tabletop, the arm swings down with the hook facing underneath the table. These tiny hooks can hold their own! Designed for balance, they effortlessly hold your bag close by and out of the way. They are definitely making a comeback and I see them available everywhere now - but I still think they got it right the first time! Vintage purse holders have been to many events and have many stories to tell - why not try one? About 4" in length, they tuck into the side of your purse without any bulk. Available on eBay and in antique stores, you can pick one up for as little as $5. So before your next event or wedding, think purse hooks!
Here is a new blog series for you, showing you tried and true vintage items that are still great to use today. Now that I'm no longer selling antiques, it makes me miss picking up all these great finds! But in this series we'll show you great vintage and antique items to collect and most of which I use in my own home! And we'll show you why vintage did it just right.
Vintage Tea Towels. Why are these great? If you're like me, you've tried all kinds of dish drying towels over the years. They might be great on the first day but eventually they seem to stop soaking up water. Solution? Try vintage tea towels. Available in every antiques market, thrift store, and usually under $6. Often made of pure linen or cotton, our grandmothers didn't have fabric softeners like we do today. Fabric softeners coat the fibres and eventually your towels will stop drying effectively. Available in countless patterns and styles, and my favourite - yearly calendars. When looking for vintage, try to find unused if possible. When laundering, best to wash in HOT water, no fabric softener, and let air dry - preferably outdoors! What to do if your tea towels already have too much resistance built up? Try laundering them in a pot of boiling water for 10 minutes. Again, let air dry. Happy resurrecting!
